Running alongside both courses are the following practical classes:

Creative Skills

Students produce a number of items as part of creative skills. These include a baby mobile, a treasure basket, puppets, a sensory resource, books with props and a fancy dress basket. This work provides students with a variety of creative opportunities and allows artistic talents to be used as well as developing sewing skills.

Home Economics
The aims of this training are to reinforce awareness of the nutritional value of foods and the importance of a healthy diet; to teach the basics of good meal planning and to foster enjoyment and confidence in the preparation of food.

Please note that students are not expected to arrive with experience in either sewing or cooking.

Practical Skills
This includes instruction in topics such as planning a birthday party, story telling, bathing routines for baby and child, the making up and storing of formula feeds, dealing with challenging behaviour and safety in the home and workplace.

As part of the Norland Diploma students are required to achieve a certificatein all 3 ofthe subjects above.

Musicclasses

We are delighted to announce that Grenville Jones, famous for his success with the Bath Male Choir on BBC’s Last Choir Standing, has agreed to run music classes at Norland College from September 2009. The classes will include the value of using music with children, as well as the history of nursery rhymes.

Grenville Jones originally teamed up with Norland to train the college choir to sing on the opening night of the hit show Mary Poppins at Cardiff’s Millennium Centre in February 2009. The students sang to the arriving audience in the foyer before the show. Mr Jones will also continue his work with the choir in the next academic year.
