Norland College History

Norland College was founded in 1892. It is based in Bath and for over a century has been internationally recognised as the premier provider of childcare training and education.

The founder of Norland College, Emily Ward, believed that the care of children should centre on the child and be loving and nurturing. Whilst there have been enormous changes in society, the values and philosophy that formed the basis of these ideals remain relevant and crucial to Norland College today.

The wide-ranging curriculum offered at Norland is based on a firmly-held belief that Norland graduates should be adept at practical skills in addition to having love and respect for children. Students benefit from this remarkable mix that produces confident, capable, trusted and knowledgeable Norlanders.

The Norland motto, ‘Love Never Faileth’, is central to Norland’s values. These values are based on a strong foundation of principles centred on the ideas of Froebel (the German educationalist best known as the originator of the ‘kindergarten system’) and adapted to be relevant to the needs of young children and their families.

A fascinatinginsight intothe earliest experiences of a 'Norland Nurse' can be found in the 'Nursing Record &Hospital World' written in 1894.
