Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Children and Young People’s Services

Are you currently in a leadership position in your Early Years setting or are you considering a senior role in the future?

The Diploma in Leadership for Children and Young People’s Services is a Level 5 programme designed for those who hold at least a Level 3 qualification and wish to study whilst continuing in employment (either full-time or part-time).

Who should do this course?

This course is for those who wish to develop their knowledge in the area of management through a practical route. It is suitable for practitioners in a leadership position, or those considering a senior role in the future, who would benefit from a programme where learning is based on making strong links between theory and practice.

There are two pathways to achieving this qualification:

The Management Pathway; or

The Advanced Practice Pathway

The Management Pathway is suitable for Assistant Managers and Deputy Managers working in children’s day care nursery or nursery settings who are looking to progress their career. It is also appropriate for managers who have not yet achieved a vocational qualification at this level.

The Advanced Practice Pathway is geared towards both senior practitioners and those wishing to take on a more senior role. This pathway enhances skills and knowledge in team management.

What will I study?

Whichever you choose, all students study five core mandatory units which include Communication, Professional Development, Equality and Working in Partnership. There are further mandatory units which relate to your particular pathway and additional optional units. To complete the Diploma, each student must study a total of 80 credits.

Altogether, the units cover a wide range of topics including Leading and Managing Teams, Safeguarding and Protection, Quality Systems and Improvement, Developing and Carrying out Policy, Promoting and Developing Best Practice and Care Management.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed using a range of methods including regular visits to your workplace by the course assessor who will directly observe your practical work, a portfolio of evidence, professional discussion, presentations and written tasks. There are no essays or examinations.

Workshops will be held at Norland College once every half term on a weekday evening. There will be a total of 6 workshops during the course.

What are the entry requirements?

You must be at least 19 years old and hold a Level 3 qualification, or above, in a related area. You must currently be in employment (paid or unpaid) in an Early Years setting and show competence in both knowledge and skills.

How long will it take to complete?

This course should take one year to complete. However if you require additional time, this can be arranged with your individual tutor.
